Requirements for Flight Testing Automated Terminal Service.
Abstract
This report describes requirements for the flight tests of the baseline Automated Terminals Service (ATS) system. The overall objective of the flight test program is to evaluate the feasibility of the ATS concept. Within this objective there are two categories of specific ATS flight test objectives: (1) the objectives concerned with verifying the basic advisory capabilities of ATS and (2) the objectives concerned with evaluating pilots' responses to ATS messages. The flight testing is broken down into three parts. Part I will consist of system checkout flights. Part II will consist of validation and some pilot evaluation tests and will be conducted at NAFEC. Part III will consist primarily of normal airport operations at a selected general aviation airport. The requirements for the Part II and III evaluations of each of the ATS services to pilots are presented. For each service, there is a listing of the major issues involved in the evaluation and a discussion of the methods to be used in the evaluation. The description of the test methods for each service presents the type of missions that will be required, along with a table showing the measures to be taken and the sources of data where these measures can be most easily obtained.
