Energy Shift of Alkali Earths in the Vicinity of Metal Surfaces.

Abstract

The theory of alkali earth atom-metal interactions is examined. The contribution to the surface potential arising from the ions can be decomposed into two terms, one a point-charge lattice term and the other dependent on the surface states of the ions comprising the lattice. These contributions to the potential are combined with Gadzuk's image formalism to obtain energy shifts of the alkali atoms K on Pt, Cs on W, and K and Cs on PrSb. Gadzuk's theory is reviewed and criticized for self-consistency. (Author)
