Rare Earth Ion-Host Lattice Interactions. 12. Lanthanides in Y3Ga5O12.
Abstract
In this work phenomenological even-fold crystal field parameters, even-k B sub KM are obtained that yield least root-mean-square deviations between theoretical and previously measured energy levels for triply ionized neodymium, dysprosium, samarium, and erbium in yttrium gallium garnet, Y3Ga5O12 (YGG). A smooth set of B sub km are obtained and are used to calculate energy levels for the ground configurations for all the lanthanides in YGG by diagonalizing a parameterized D2 Hamiltonian in free-ion bases for these lanthanide ions. A D2d approximation is made and odd-k crystal field components are obtained by a sum over the YGG lattice. The D2d approximated parameters are used to calculate squared-matrix elements of the electric dipole operator between the Stark-split energy levels for the lanthanides in YGG. (Author)
