Differentiation versus Discrimination.

Abstract

The elimination of sex discrimination in the Army is of military importance because the Women's Army Corps officer will play a significant role in the all-volunteer Army. If women are expected to continue to volunteer to become WAC officers, they must be assured that they will be provided equal opportunity and treatment. This study examines attitudes of Army women toward differentiation between male and female officers in their career development which might result in institutional discrimination against WAC officers. The basic issues considered were: is there discrimination against WAC officers in the areas of promotions, assignment, training, schooling and utilization; and, if so, how does it exist, why does it exist, and what action can be taken to eliminate it. The study was based on the hypothesis that WAC officers are subjected to institutional discrimination in the Army.
