Temperature Measurement of Residual Penetration Fragments

Abstract

The temperature of residual fragments from the low velocity penetration of 1.27 steel spheres into various targets has been measured by 2- band infrared radiometry. The residual velocities of the fragements were also measured. The temperatures correlate well with the predictions of a simple model based on the conversion of mechanical energy to heat. The residual velocities correlate with theoretical and previous empirical data.
