Interaction of Lipids with Inert Gases.

Abstract

The role of lipid peroxidation in the induction of disease has been elaborated upon in this report, with examples such as multiple sclerosis and vitamin E deficiency. Autoxidation of the methyl esters of linoleic acid are appreciably different in various oxygen mixture atmospheres, whereas the autoxidation of linoelaidic acid methyl ester is not. This observation has led to a speculation that there is a specific interaction of inert gases with polyunsaturated lipids containing cis bonds. (Author)
