The Regeneration of South China Sea Tropical Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal.

Abstract

Rarely does a tropical cyclone cross from the South China Sea, weaken over Southeast Asia, and regenerate into a tropical cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. During the 7-year period 1967-73, there were only three occurrences of this phenomenon -- and two of these occurred in September 1972. Analyses of the atmospheric circulations during September 1972 lead to a tentative hypothesis of the combination of factors required for this rare event. (Author)
