Manufacture of PCDE Prepolymer

Abstract

Under Air Force Contract F33615-68-C-1568, Shell Development Company developed and evaluated a process for making PCDE, progressing through the intermediate steps of PECH, DEPECH, and PBEP. Hercules Incorporated, under Shell Contract SDNO 84723, for Air Force Contract F33615-72-C-1446, successfully demonstrated the PBEP and PCDE processes at rates of 6 lb/hr and provided other data pertinent to designing a large scale PCDE manufacturing plant. Study was made of two methods for increasing the molecular weight and functionality of PCDE by improving the qualities in the PECH. The first method was to subject 'standard' PECH to treatment that would retain only the higher molecular weight fraction. The second method used was to vary the PECH process to increase the molecular weight and functionality. The latter approach, a low temperature process, was chosen as the best method for making improved product.
