Scientific Plan for the Proposed Nansen Drift Station,

Abstract

While field stations on drifting pack ice will remain useful for special purposes, recent scientific and technological developments have fostered the idea to use or, reuse with modern means, the icebreaker supported by aircraft as a research platform. The project, entitled the 'Nansen Drift Station' (NDS) is described in this report. The scientific program is planned to include: Marine Geophysics and Tectonics; Marine Geology and Paleoclimatology; Physical Oceanography; Biology and Biochemistry; Marine Acoustics; Heat and Mass Balance of the Ice Cover; Troposphere; Ice Physics and Engineering; Atmosphere-Ionosphere-Magnetosphere; and Remote Sensing.
