Feasibility of Using HE in Model Tests of Structures.
Abstract
This report presents the results of examining the feasibility of using gun propellants to obtain desirable pressure sources for model tests of deep-based facilities. Numerous calculations and experiments were performed. The results showed that propellant mixtures can be successfully used as a pressure source for the desired structural model tests. Structural model behavior and their scalability to fullscale facilities in the follow-on testing efforts are also discussed. The structural models to be employed are large enough to allow use of shapes, types of materials and fabrication procedures which realistically represent full-sized structures. Model tests in the laboratory generally cannot include these potentially important structural features. The propellant mixtures developed in this report can be used to test model structures in simulated media. The promising results summarized herein enhance the authors' opinion that scaled model testing of a complete deep-based facility in a rock simulant and possibly a natural medium will eventually supplant the need for full-scale testing.
