Field Electron and Ion Source Research for High Density Information Storage System.

Abstract

The purpose of this research program is the development of high brightness field emission sources of both ions and electrons by use of field emission phenomena. In this report we concentrate on the liquid alloy (Ga/In (10%)) source. Both ion and electron emission results are reported along with analysis of the effect of various source configuration on its performance. The angular distribution has been measured for ion emission in a qualitative fashion and gives an angular intensity between 60 to 300 microns A/sr. The electron emission exhibits only a pulse mode of width approximately 10 nsec and amplitude approximately 100 A. A much larger angular distribution of the pulsed electron beam was observed in the electron mode. (Author)
