Trifluoromethylsulfur Trifluoride. An Improved Synthesis, New NMR Data and Stereochemistry.

Abstract

An improved synthesis of CF3SF3 has been devised which involves the direct fluorination of CF3SSCF3 in a continuous flow reactor. C13 and variable temperature F19 NMR data have been acquired for CF3SF3. These data indicate that the CF3 group occupies an equatorial site on a idealized trigonal bipyramidal structure. The barrier to intramolecular fluorine exchange in CF3SF3 is unusually high ( > 17 kcal/mole).
