Performance Characteristics of an Attitude Velocity Acceleration and Rate Unit (NIS-210-24).

Abstract

This report summarizes the test results obtained in the laboratory on the Northrop NIS-210-24 Attitude, Velocity, Acceleration and Rate Sensing Unit (AVAR). The AVAR is a three gyro, three accelerometer strapdown unit mounted on a single gimbal, organized to sense the body rates of the vehicle in which it is mounted. Included in the AVAR unit is a processor which accepts the sensor digital information and transforms the body reference information into a stable inertial frame. For the purpose of these tests, the AVAR provided the inertial information to a commercial HP computer which solved the navigation equations. The testing performed on the unit utilizing the gimbal to provide azimuth rotation indicated 3-5 naut. miles per hour performance capability. (Author)
