A Users Guide to the GEODSS Real-Time System

Abstract

The following guide describes the GEODSS Real-Time and simulated system from the standpoint of the operator. Included are descriptions of system messages, operator inputs and options, and error conditions and recovery procedures. Much of the system is controlled by programmable buttons, and diagrams of their locations and functions are included in the appendix. The Real-Time System runs on a MODCOMP IV computer with 128K of core. It gives the operator control of one of two 31-inch optical telescopes in the automatic search/track or manual modes. The automatic modes are used for locating and tracking satellites. To aid in finding them, various scan patterns are available, which may be superimposed on the basic tracking of the telescope. The operator may also control the telescope manually at rates ranging from a few seconds of arc to four degrees per second. Calibration and calibration checking are two other features of this system. Magnetic tape recording, line printer output and a metric observation file log the metric data. Target identification assistance is provided by a program that lists all known satellites within five degrees. A satellite scheduling program may be used to automate scheduling. An SOI data collection capability is also available.
