RARIE: A Relative Ranging System for Research Ships.

Abstract

Two developmental ranging (RARIE) equipments were constructed and evaluated in sea tests. The equipment measured the separation between two surfaced submarines at all ranges up to 60 miles, with an accuracy of + or - 0.1 mile. It is probable that the range can be extended to more than 100 miles. RARIE was found capable of supplying not only range information but voice communications that did not interfere with regular ship communications. (Author)
