Synthesis of Electron-Deficient Bifferracarboranes.

Abstract

The polyhedral expansion of 3.1.2-C5H5FeC2B9H11 produced three new electron-deficient biferracarboranes (C5H5Fe)2C2B9H11, (C5H5Fe)2C2B8H9(OH) and (C5H5FeC2B9H11FeC2B9H11)(-). All three complexes contained formal Fe(III) atoms and were diamagnetic. The proposed structures, based on spectroscopic and crystallographic data, contain non-bonded iron atoms. These complexes constitute the first examples of long-range electron-spin coupling through a carborane polyhedron. (Author)
