Speech Understanding Systems. Summary of Results of the Five-Year Research Effort at Carnegie-Mellon University

Abstract

This report is an augmented version of a report originally issued in September 1976, during the demonstration at the end of the five-year speech effort. The first section reports on the various speech understanding systems developed at CMU during the five year period and highlights their individual contributions. After a brief description of several techniques and knowledge sources that contributed to the success of the final systems, detailed performance results of the Harpy and Hearsay-II systems are provided. Results include the performance of the systems not only for the 1000 word task but for several simpler tasks. Also included are reprints of papers presented at various conferences since September 1976 and a list of publications of the CMU speech group.
