Application of Superplastic Steels.

Abstract

This program is being conducted to demonstrate that the GATORIZING forge process can be applied to the precision forging of superplastic steels, and to determine the economic benefits gained over conventional forging and subsequent machining to final shape. During this rpeort period, the thermomechnical processing of an ultrahigh-carbon steel was initiated to convert its cast structure to a characteristic fine grained superplastic structure. Alloy development studies were initiated with laser treated arc cast buttons which were extruded and thermomechanically processed in such a way that the stability of recrystallized fine grained sturcutres could be evaluated.
