Maintaining the Geostrategic Advantage.

Abstract

The United States, in conjunction with its Allies, has enjoyed the geostrategic advantages of exterior lines for so long that they have been taken for granted. This memorandum cites two evolving conditions which give reason to pay explicit attention to the US geostrategic position. First is the growing military power of the USSR together with its striving to achieve a capability to project its conventional military power outside the continental land mass of Eurasia; second is the realization that the world has truly been shrinking due to scientific, technological, political and economic advances. The memorandum concludes that more attention needs to be given to problems which are often separately addressed (SALT, NATO, nuclear proliferation and others) in order to understand their relationship to the maintenance of the geostrategic advantage for the United States and its Allies.
