Rifle Evaluation Study

Abstract

The methodology used in approaching this study is an analysis and requirements of the basic combat unit of the US Army; the Infantry squad. Although the individual soldier is the major user of small arms weapons, he does not function in battle as an individual. Rather, he functions as a member of a team - the squad - and cannot be considered in isolation. Doctrine and concepts of employment envision teamwork between combat elements. Since the Infantry squad is the basic combat unit, it is considered the most valid organization for evaluation of doctrine, employment and requirements for small arms weapon. Annex B contains a discussion of concepts and requirements and is the study foundation.
