The Distance between a Point and an Ellipsoid.

Abstract

The method of the calculus of variations is used to determine the distance from any point, not in a coordinate plane, to the surface of an ellipsoid. The distance from any point in the coordinate plane to the surface of an ellipsoid is formulated by the method of Lagrange multipliers. A computer program has been developed to compute this distance.
