Sources of Error in the Measurement of Underwater Shock-Wave Properties.

Abstract

A number of possible sources of error in the determination of underwater shock-wave parameters have been assessed by variance analysis. It was found that the major effect results from random variation in experimental conditions and measurement errors. Since properties are power functions of standoff distance, the magnitudes of the errors are larger for small values of stand-off. It is shown that the pressure gauges require re-calibration after experiencing shock pressures of 120 MPa; the use of the standard 0.45 kg (1 lb) TNT charge to calibrate gauges was found to be a viable, though not preferred method, since it suffers from low precision. Some comments on possible methods of improving resolution are given. (Author)
