Hologram Replication Investigation.

Abstract

Techniques for replicating silver fiche containing up to 30-million bits of digital information were investigated. The digital data are stored in the form of 68-bit 1.2 micrometer x 1.5 mm computer-generated holograms, which are generated with the RADC HRMR Microfiche Mass Memory System. Replication was shown to solve several problems. First, it makes available on a rapid cost-effective basis a multiplicity of unit records for internal and remote dissemination. Second, it compensates for a systematic resolution limitation of the HRMR Recorder. By exploiting the inherent nonlinearity of most light-sensitive media, a contrast enchancement is effected that results in significant signal-to-noise ratio and diffraction efficiency improvements. In addition, bit intensity rolloff across the signal bandpass is minimized. The approach of the Hologram Replication Investigation was to first identify and characterize commerical duplication films and then to use the most promising recording media to study and optimize first and second generation HRMR fiche replication.
