Development of Nonelectronic Part Cyclic Failure Rates
Abstract
A 12-month program to develop base failure rates and failure rate mathematical models for relays, switches, and connectors was conducted. These models are provided in the format of MIL-HDBK-217B and include the model and instructions for its use. More than 10 billion part-hours of operating field data were collected from industrial and Government data sources. Data was analyzed manually and sorted by computer. Conclusions are summarized in the revised base failure rates and mathematical models described. Failure rates for connectors and switches show a significant decrease from present rates, for relays, show a marginal decrease. A mating factor, pi sub K, has been developed for the connector model, and a stress factor has been added to the switch model.
