Radar Tracking of Ion Clouds. Technical Report 1 - Project STRESS.

Abstract

Project STRESS utilized a series of high-altitude releases of barium that became ionized by solar radiation. The project required that the resulting ion cloud be tracked in real time, and this was accomplished by operating the AN/FPS-85 radar in the incoherent-scatter mode. This report describes the data-acquisition process and the tracking algorithm, and presents a preliminary look at the most important measurements obtained. The tracking of a Ba-ion cloud, attempted for the first time, was successfully accomplished for the time periods of up to 10 minutes. (Author)
