Program Design Languages-An Introduction.

Abstract

This report is an introduction to program design languages (PDLs). A definition is given, and general functions of PDLs are discussed. A set of characteristics is defined to (1) indicate types of design information representable in PDLs and (2) to provide a framework for comparing various PDLs. Each PDL reviewed in a brief survey is discussed within the framework of these characteristics. The set of characteristics set forth when expanded, curtailed, or amended according to special needs may constitute the specification for a PDL desirable for a particular class of application.
