Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) Ship Structural Weight Parametrics Using the Structural Synthesis Design Program.

Abstract

Several means for reducing SWATH primary structural weight were studied parametrically. This was to aid in broadening the structural data base for the NAVSEC SWATH Design Synthesis Model. The parameters studied included: transverse frame spacing, materials, intermediate lateral support, and use of longitudinal girders. Associated studies of bending moment, effective breath, and special plating effects were also conducted. It was found that accumulated weight savings can amount to 10-20% of the primary structure relative to that calculated by the SWATH Synthesis Model, that primary structural weight-estimating techniques should be dependent on the structural geometry, and that detailed structural studies should be made on a case basis as early as possible in a SWATH design.
