Runway Site Survey, Pensacola Mountains, Antarctica.

Abstract

Two blue ice areas were surveyed in the Pensacola Mountain region of Antarctica and found suitable for runway sites. A length of 2.5 to 3 km, oriented in the predominant wind direction, is available at Rosser Ridge, requiring very little snow removal. A length of 3 km, oriented at 30 deg to 45 deg with the predominant wind direction, is available at Mt. Lechner, but considerable snow removal would be required, and some obstacles are present near both ends of the runway area. Aerial inspection disclosed one and probably two more suitable sites near the Patuxent Range. (Author)
