R and D Equipment Information Report: Tracking and Significance Estimator.

Abstract

Equipment is described which operates on data obtained by a coherent meteorological radar with doppler pulse pair processor. The Tracking and Significance Estimator (TSE) periodically acquires logarithmic power, mean doppler velocity, and variance of doppler velocity for an entire azimuthal antenna scan. The TSE finds the twelve most severe storm cells, computes their reflectivity-weighted centers, then plots the centers and the cell outlines on a color CRT display. Centers from up to 24 previous acquisition intervals, color coded according to acquisition time, are also presented so as to form storm cell tracks. (Author)
