Predicted Long-Term Storage Effects on the Model 4841 Lance Accelerometer.
Abstract
The Model 4841 Lance accelerometer has experienced numerous cases where, after extended storage, gas ingestion through leaks in the oil seal caused the voltage output to drift. A solution to this problem has been to backfill the outer dust cover with xenon. The present work describes in detail several engineering analyses undertaken to evaluate the anticipated performance of such a solution. First, the relative effectiveness of the O-ring seal versus the Loctite seal is investigated. Then, detailed calculations are made which lead to predictions of storage lifetimes as a function of the leak size in the outer dust cover. Finally, an analysis is made which shows the effect of a leaky float box and predicts the internal pressure in the float as a function of time. (Author)
