A Turbulent Region in a Turbulent World: North Africa and the Middle East

Abstract

The region stretching from the Atlantic to the Aegean Sea and from the Mediterranean to the Arabian Sea, including the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, covers the southern flanks of both NATO and the Soviet Union and contains a very high percentage of the world's vital oil supplies. It is of major significance in the continuing quest for global stability.
