Recreational Boating in the Continental United States in 1973 and 1976: The Nationwide Boating Survey.

Abstract

A nationwide survey of 1976 boating activity was conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard in order to expand and clarify existing information on recreational boating. Using randomly generated telephone numbers, more than 28,000 households in the continental United States were contacted and those owning and/or operating boats were interviewed. Results from these interviews were used to calculate population estimates. This report provides: (1) estimates of the numbers of pleasure boats and their characteristics: (2) information on safety and communication equipment on these boats; (3) boating household and operator characteristics and activities; and (4) feedback on the emergency assistance and boating education programs.
