Abstract

This is the Final Report on the Development of Basic Processing Technology for Bearing Quality Silicon Nitride Balls. Substantial rolling contact fatigue life data generated on balls has demonstrated the potential of this material for reliable long life. To provide a cost-effective manufacturing technology, fabrication of rough spheres directly from silicon nitride powder was undertaken. These were finished into 17.5mm size balls to generate rolling contact fatigue life data comparable to that available in the literature.
