Prism Plot Analysis of the Reaction pi(-)p yields p pi(+)pi(-)pi(-) at 15 GeV/c.
Abstract
The four body final state pi(-)p yields p pi(+)pi(-)pi(-) has been analyzed at incident beam momentum of 15 GeV/c. The data are taken from 460,000 photographs of the SLAC 82-inch Hydrogen Bubble Chamber. All events were measured by the M.I.T. PEPR (Precision Encoding and Pattern Recognition) system, and processed through the CERBERUS-GEOMAT-SQUAW chain. The four body final state pi(-)p yields p pi(+)pi(-)pi(-) is analyzed by means of the Prism Plot technique. Cross sections, invariant mass spectra and angular distributions for all channels contributing to the final state are presented. The dominant channels are found to be the diffraction dissociation of the beam and nucleon. A new, broad, three pion enhancement, first reported by other groups, is clearly seen in the data with a cross section of 132 + or - 56 microbars. Its mass distribution centers about 1.7 sq GeV/c, and it decays through the rho 0 pi(-) mode. (Author)
