Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis of a Solid Propellant Grain Transition Region.

Abstract

A three-dimensional finite element analysis of the transition region, from a star cross-section to a cylindrical bore cross-section, for a typical solid propellant rocket motor grain configuration is carried out. The recently developed TEXGAP-3D (Texas Grain Analysis Program, 3-Dimensional) static linear elastic stress analysis computer program is employed in the analysis. Two loading conditions, combustion pressure and thermal, are considered, along with corresponding transition interface displacements obtained from previous two-dimensional finite element analyses of the uniform grain regions.
