Adaptive Piecewise Polynomial L1 Approximation.

Abstract

Previously, programs had been introduced for adaptively computing smooth piecewise polynomial approximations using uniform, least-squares (L2), and restricted range uniform approximations. In this paper, a program for computing smooth piecewise polynomial L1 approximations is introduced. The adaptive curve fitting scheme employed is discussed in detail as is the algorithm used for determining the L1 approximations. Finally, numerical results are presented in an attempt to illustrate the effective use of this newly developed L1 curve fitting package. (Author)
