Evaluation of High Performance Liquid Chromatography Packings for the Concentration and Separation of Organic Materials in Water.

Abstract

Amberlite XAD-4 non-ionic adsorbent has been evaluated as a reverse phase concentrating agent for some aromatic and aliphatic compounds present in oily wastes dissolved in water retention efficiencies of 86 - 88% were found by extracting water samples before and after passing through XAD-4, aromatic concentrations being determined by liquid chromatography and aliphatic concentrations by an infrared technique. Effects of flow rate, sample size, and the weight of XAD-4 on retention efficiency are discussed. XAD-4 has proven to be an excellent trapping agent for trace amounts of organic compounds in water.
