Bridging the Gap Between Environmental Data Systems and Potential Users.

Abstract

The Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in Champaign-Urbana has developed a series of computerized programs designed to assist personnel involved in writing Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements. These programs have heen developed at considerable cost to the government. It would seem that a considerable savings would result from full utilization of these programs. At present the Navy has no systematic approach to the writing of EIAs and EISes. The purpose of this project was to examine the systems at CERL to determine: (a) if the utilization of their programs by the Navy might result in significant savings in time and money in the preparation of EIAs and EISes; and (b) whether these files could be utilized by personnel at various levels in the Navy or whether they would be too estoeric for most potential users.
