Infrared Spectra of Fluid Films under Conditions of Incipient Bearing Failure.

Abstract

Emission Spectra were obtained from our operating E.H.D. contacts through a diamond window, using a specially built Fourier Infrared Emission Microinterferometer. These spectra were compared with similar statis spectra obtained in a high-pressure diamond anvil cell. As an example, 5P4E, polyphenyl ether fluid is discussed in detail. Changes in the spectrum with pressure and temperature under statis conditions allow inferences on these parameters under various dynamic conditions. The dynamic spectra differ markedly under polarization, an indication of molecular alignment. (Author)
