Derivation of Conditional Kill Probabilities for Propellant-Filled Cartridge Cases Subject to Fragment Attack

Abstract

A method of deriving conditional kill probabilities for fragment attack of propellant-filled cartridge cases is presented. Previous experimental test firings yielded reaction probabilities for various levels of fragment striking speeds. A new kill criterion was constructed as a function of residual fragment speed after cartridge case perforation. The Kill criterion was incorporated in a vulnerability code and average kill probabilities for various striking mass/speed combinations were produced. From these data, equations expressing conditional kill probability as a function of striking mass and striking speed were generated. (Author)
