SXTF Technical Factors Study.

Abstract

This report discusses technical issues related to the satellite x-ray test facility (SXTF); this work is the first phase of a longer range effort. The primary purpose of this first phase was to identify the significant technical problems involved in design and operation of a vacuum test chamber and its support equipment, and the basic instrumentation requirements for operating the test chamber and the satellite under test, and to outline methods for solving problems. The discussion focuses on important technical issues related to vacuum tank design, instrumentation, and operation. These issues are vacuum tank size and wall construction, EM damping grid, electron backscatter control, geomagnetic field suppression, cold wall options, solar illuminator, and site instrumentation. A summary of findings in each of these technical areas is included. (Author)
