Silver-Zinc Batteries,

Abstract

Until about a decade ago, only lead-acid storage batteries were utilized as a reserve source of dc power for aircraft applications. However, technological advances in the alkaline family of batteries have introduced new electrochemical systems having significant advantages over the lead-acid battery. One of these electrochemical systems is the silver-zinc battery. The silver-zinc battery derives its name from its active materials, silver-oxide (AgO) for the positive electrode and porous zinc metal (Zn) for the negative electrode. The electrolyte is a liquid solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) in distilled water. (Author)
