Progress and Problems in Seismic Verification Research. A Collection of Papers Presented to the United Nations Conference of the Committee on Disarmament at Geneva in the Years 1971, 1972, 1973.

Abstract

This volume comprises three working papers on the subject of Seismic Verification Research originally presented in Geneva in support of the work of the United Nations Conference of the Committee on Disarmament. The first paper, presented in 1971, sets the stage for the succeeding working papers in 1972 and 1973 which were aimed at highlighting residual problems hindering seismic verification, and approaches to their solution. This volume, therefore, represents an updated presentation of the U.S. technical position on seismic verification of a comprehensive test ban in this forum. Also included is the tabling speech accompanying the 1972 working paper given by the U.S. Ambassador to the CCD, Honorable Joseph Martin, Jr., which provides some political commentary on the technical presentation. Papers presented in 1971 and 1973 were in support of informal meetings of seismic experts convened by the Conference. The compilation of this volume involved the work of many people in many organizations--government, university, and industry. Their dedicated and skillful pursuit of this important topic of research is acknowledged. The work has evoked much interest, and requests for copies of the various papers have been numerous. We are pleased, therefore, to have the opportunity to satisfy these requests and at the same time present this topic to a wider and concerned audience. (Author)
