Some New Map Data Encoding Schemes.

Abstract

Some new schemes for encoding map data are introduced. The schemes can be regarded as generalizations of the well known 8-direction chain coding scheme. Instead of being limited to 8 types of links for approximating a curve, the new schemes possess 16, 24, 32, 48, or even more link types. The new schemes permit increased smoothness of representation, exhibit greater precision, and require less processing time for comparable resolution than present methods. (Author)
