Stratospheric Measurements

Abstract

The objective of this contract was to obtain stratospheric data concerning the distribution of neutral constituents and ions by a series of balloon flights. The program logically separates into two distinct studies since two different balloon-borne instruments are used to obtain the data. Data concerning the neutral constituents are obtained by means of a liquid helium- cooled grating spectrometer system which measures the atmospheric emission as a function of altitude as the balloon ascends. Data concerning the charged species are obtained by means of a balloon-borne quadrupole mass spectrometer system which samples and identifies ambient ions at float altitude or as the balloon descends. The two distinct measurement techniques and hence flight programs are discussed in separate sections of this review, each one complete on its own.
