F-Picryldinitromethane. Synthesis and Properties

Abstract

A completely fluorinated analog of picryldinitromethane has been made as part of a research effort aimed at the synthesis of high-density, zero hydrogen explosives. 1,3,5-Trifluorotrinitrobenzene, used as starting material in the synthesis and of interest in itself as a dense energetic material, was prepared by a new and improved method. In the course of the synthesis, a technique was developed for control of the ambident behavior of polynitroalkyl anions which may have general application in reactions of these nucleophiles.
