Electrical Enhancement of Healing in Combat Injuries to Hard and Soft Tissues.

Abstract

Over the past decade a large body of experimental evidence has accumulated showing the positive influence of electric currents on bone metabolism. It is evident that modeling, remodeling and repair are regulated, through bone's piezoelectric properties as mechanical transducers in a closed loop system. In situations where enhancement of normal function of the transducer system is desirable, viz during bone repair, it would be advantageous to use an exogenous source of electric current. (Author)
