Evaluation of Lubrication Systems for Isothermal Forging of Alpha-Beta and Beta Titanium Alloys.

Abstract

This technical report presents the results of the lubrication evaluations on the newly-developed lubricants for isothermal forging of both alpha-beta and beta titanium alloys. It was demonstrated that, for alpha-beta titanium alloy lubricants, each lubricant still has its relative virtues and limitations in manufacturing performance. None of the present lubricants could provide satisfactory lubrication-functions for use in the gas-fired environment. However, several lubricants for beta-titanium alloys displayed excellent combinations of lubricity and adhesion properties in both electric and gas-fired environments and may represent the state of the art for isothermal forging lubricants.
