Preliminary Guide to Wetlands of the Gulf Coastal Plain. Major Associations and Communities Identified.

Abstract

This report represents one of a series of eight preliminary guides to the dominant plant associations and communities found in the major wetlands of the United States. The primary purpose of the guidebook is to aid regulatory functions personnel in recognizing and delineating wetlands subject to permit regulation under Section 404 of Public Law 92-500 (Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972). The main body of the report contains a brief section which provides a broad context for the following more detailed descriptions of the dominant plant associations and communities found in the major wetlands of the region. Detailed description of wetland vegetation is based upon data in the literature and information from scientists having familiarity with the region. The goal of this section is to provide a description sufficiently detailed for field use but not to report minor variations of each wetland.
