Reflections in a Pool of Processors. An Experience Report on C.mmp/ Hydra

Abstract

This paper is a frankly subjective reflection upon the successes and failures in a large research project -- the construction of a multiprocessor computer, C.mmp, and its operating system, Hydra -- by those most intimately involved in its design, construction, and use. It attempts to catalog and characterize the things we feel we did right and the things we did wrong. We sincerely hope that this sort of evaluation will help others who undertake similar projects.
